Drivers breaking down due to no fuel, says car insurance firm
By Jonathan Dawes, Fri 18 Jul 2008 - Published in Breakdown Cover
The last three months have seen 340,000 motorists break down on the road because they ran out of fuel, according to a car insurance provider.
New research from Britannica Rescue/LV= said this figure is a ten per cent increase from the same time in 2007, while the average price to fill up a petrol tank has risen from £38.50 to £50 in this period.
Possibly as a result of this cost increase, 47 per cent of drivers admitted to running their vehicle on "the bare minimum" and increasing numbers of people are chancing it to see how far they can go on limited fuel.
However, many say this is damaging to a car's internal system - and if a breakdown is caused then the price to get back up and running can be large if the driver has no cover.
Britannica Rescue spokesperson Emma Holyer added: "Running a car on empty can damage a car's fuel pump - requiring repairs that will make a full tank of £50 petrol seem like a bargain."
While looking for suitable breakdown cover, car insurance customers might benefit from checking out what motoring cover is currently the most competitively priced and if they can save money by switching providers.
