HPI checks reveal 1 in 3 cars have something to hide

Buying a second-hand car could be wrought with danger if precautions are not taken, according to analysis of over ten million HPI checks.

It found that one in three vehicles which were checked by HPI might have something to hide.

This could include outstanding finance, where one in four cars were found to still be on an agreement, with the new owner possibly being liable to pay this.

HPI also found that around 20 vehicles each day are uncovered as stolen, although criminals are often able to mask this by using 'cloning' tricks.

Kristian Welch, consumer director for HPI, said: "It’s alarming to see used car buyers are still exposed to danger when looking to invest their hard-earned cash in a new set of wheels. Yet, with an HPI Check report, there’s no need to take that risk."

The statistics mean that it is important car buyers use a reliable source for getting their next vehicle, otherwise they could find that their car insurance is invalidated.
