Insurance 'can be reduced by using a motorcycle'

Consumers looking to save money on their insurance premiums could find that switching from driving a car to owning a motorbike may help, an expert has suggested.

And as well as savings on insurance, using a motorbike has a number of other benefits, public relations manager at AA insurance Ian Crowder said.

"[Motorbikes] are easier to park, they're economical and the do tend to be somewhat cheaper to insure as well," said Mr Crowder.

He added that usage of bikes in city centres, particularly in London, is increasing, as it is easier to get around on them and they are exempt from the congestion charge.

But, Mr Crowder said, consumers are not abandoning cars in favour of bikes, instead they are using two-wheeled transport as a second vehicle.

Research conducted by Post Office earlier this year found that 14 per cent of women would consider switching their car for a motorcycle in order to save money.
