Sat nav confusion costs motorists £200m a year

Accidents caused by misleading sat nav systems cost drivers around £200 million each year, according to new research.

Figures from Confused.com showed that in the last 12 months more than eight in ten people had been sent down the wrong road by their GPS system, leading to over half screaming or shouting at the machine in frustration.

Furthermore, nearly 70 per cent were made to drive further to reach their destination because they had to take a detour.

Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at Confused.com, said: "Our research has shown that the sat nav is not always the blessing it was once hailed to be and, increasingly, motorists appear to be citing the device as a source of frustration and danger."

The problem could be compounded by using sat navs abroad, with Saga finding that the devices are the most popular travel gadget for over 50s, beating off competition from MP3 players and tablet computers.
